John Wambugu Appointed Africa Head Of Technology At IEDF
John Wambugu, technology and digital transformation expert, has been appointed Africa Head of Technology at the Informal Economy Development Forum (IEDF), a role that will see him lead initiatives aimed at advancing digital inclusion, innovation, and technology-driven economic empowerment across the continent.
In announcing the appointment, Wambugu said he is committed to leveraging technology to create economic opportunities, strengthen enterprises, unlock new markets, and empower communities across Africa.
In his new role, he will focus on supporting innovation ecosystems, strengthening strategic partnerships, and championing digital solutions that benefit entrepreneurs, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), creatives, and communities operating within Africa’s informal economy.

“The informal economy is one of Africa’s greatest engines of enterprise and livelihoods. By leveraging technology, we have an opportunity to expand access, increase productivity, and create sustainable pathways to economic growth,” Wambugu said.
His appointment comes at a time when governments, development organizations, and private sector players are increasingly looking to digital technologies to drive financial inclusion, entrepreneurship, and economic development across the continent.
Wambugu brings extensive experience in technology strategy, business development, and digital transformation. Prior to joining IEDF, he served as a consultant as a Regional Strategy & Go-To-Market Lead – Technology and Creative & Digital Industries. He also held the position of Business Development Manager – Professional Imaging for Eastern Africa at Canon EMEA, where he played a key role in expanding technology solutions across the region.

Through his new position at IEDF, Wambugu is expected to work with partners across Africa to accelerate the adoption of technology and innovation as catalysts for inclusive economic growth and sustainable development.
