Central Bank Of Kenya Director Of IT Resigns
Central Bank of Kenya Director of Information Technology Department Anthony Gacanja, has resigned.
Noted in a CBK Governor’s Circular to all members of staff, Dr Patrick Njoroge, the current governor stated that Gacanja “communicated” to him “his decision to leave the Central Bank for personal reasons.” Gacanja, who joined CBK four years back in April 2019 led the IT department following an extensive, competitive search that cast the CBK net deep and wide.
With his input as senior management, he was tasked with developing and delivering the IT strategy at CBK as well as providing strategic IT leadership. His role included establishing and maintaining effective IT governance practices and controls, as well as benchmark best practices in IT.

Gacanja is credited with stabilising the Bank’s IT infrastructure during his tenure. With over 16 years of experience in ICT spread across tech services ranging from consultancy to telecommunications, he allowed CBK to especially shine during the pandemic. This resulted in robust systems leaping from standardised email to KEPPS/RTGS, an automated clearing house alongside OchreEDW, an Enterprise Data Warehouse to enhance data management, and DhowCSD, a digital platform launched in February 2023 allowing Kenyans to buy government securities from wherever they are, particularly in the Diaspora, replacing the previous USSD system.
Gacanja’s leadership is particularly noted by the governor who said these “Were also evident as he helped in his own quiet way to harness the existing talent in ITD, complementing them with external hires to close the skills gap.”
While the circular is dated 8 May 2023, Gacanja’s notice period expires on May 27 2023. In his stead, Dr Njoroge has assigned Dr Walter Onyino as the Ag. Director, Information Technology Department.
