Skoot Technology Launches Smart Electric Tuk-Tuk In Kenya
Skoot Technology (Skoot) has announced the launch of the Skoot e3W, a smart electric three-wheeler powered by SUN Mobility’s battery swapping technology and distributed in Kenya by Car & General
Built on a Piaggio-designed vehicle, the Skoot e3W allows drivers to replace depleted batteries in minutes, minimizing downtime. Through a unified mobile platform, drivers can manage their lease, locate nearby swap stations, and access delivery contracts directly from their phones.
“Our partnership with Skoot allows us to bring dependable electric 3-wheelers to drivers who need reliable daily earnings,” said Mr. George Rubiri, General Manager, Car & General. “With our distribution and servicing footprint and Skoot’s digital tools, we’re confident this product will transform how drivers work.”

According to the companies, the three partners conducted trials across Nairobi over the past 24 months. The pilot phase included load performance testing, swap cycle durability monitoring, maintenance stress testing, and rider experience assessments. The Skoot e3W is available on daily, weekly, or monthly lease plans at USD 9.31 (KES 1,200) per day, including maintenance.
Sacha Cook, CEO and Co-Founder of Skoot Technology said, “Skoot is transforming clean energy and mobility for drivers, homes and businesses. Our unified app and platform make it simpler to work smarter, cleaner and earn more. The Skoot e3W is built on this foundation an easy-access electric vehicle, revamped for working drivers and managed through your mobile phone. Smart gas and 2-wheelers are coming next, bringing more connected experiences to everyday life.”
A typical Skoot e3W driver is estimated to travel around 150 kilometres per day. According to pilot data, covering this distance using SUN Mobility’s battery swapping system costs approximately USD 5.04 (KES 650), compared with an estimated USD 6.59 (KES 850) spent on diesel. The companies note that costs and range can vary depending on driving conditions and habits, and that these figures are indicative rather than exact.
