Nigerian Government Unveils NIN-Enabled Farmer Registry To Boost Agriculture

The Nigerian government has launched a new initiative to modernize its agricultural sector. In collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has unveiled a National Identity Number (NIN)-enabled farmer registry and a government-to-People (G2P) card system.
The modernized registry will link each farmer’s unique NIN to their farmland and crucial details like the type of crops or livestock they cultivate and the size of their farm. The G2P card, issued to Nigerian citizens and legal residents, will serve as a multi-purpose tool for biometric verification, multiple wallets to allow digital transactions and can function in areas with limited internet connectivity.
The G2P card will facilitate access to a range of government agricultural services, including farmer financing, input distribution, land mapping, extension services, and monitoring & evaluation. The Nigerian government is also set to benefit from the G2P card with improved efficiency as well as enhanced transparency. The initiative aims to streamline the delivery of agricultural services while also using digital technology to increase transparency and accountability in the distribution of government resources.

This launch is also expected to bring a reduction to fraud in the government by linking services to unique NINs which will ensure that benefits reach the intended recipients. The Nigerian government will also be able to make data driven decisions as the system will generate valuable data that will enable the government to make more informed decisions regarding agricultural policy and resource allocation.
The NIMC will provide the foundational biometric identity framework, ensuring that each card and its associated benefits are securely linked to the correct individual. The Ministry of Agriculture will retain ownership of the data generated through the system.
This initiative is expected to significantly improve the efficiency and effectiveness of government agricultural programs. By providing farmers with easier access to vital resources and services, the government aims to boost agricultural productivity, enhance food security, and improve the livelihoods of rural communities across Nigeria.
