Safaricom Spark venture fund receives over 200 applications
Over 200 Kenyan start-ups have submitted enquiries and applications for the Safaricom Spark Venture Fund, with applications now going into the short-list phase. TBL Mirror, the fund managers for the US$1 million fund launched last year, have now embarked on the process of evaluating the start-ups in line with the fund’s objectives; with recipients set to receive between Kshs 7 million and Kshs 22 million to invest in their businesses in return for a minority stake in their companies.

Kenya’s Umati Capital wins global Mobile Technology Challenge
Umati Capital was one of the key winners in the list of top innovations announced yesterday in the Citi Mobile Challenge across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). This global initiative launched in February 2015 invited developers to build solutions based on Citi’s digital platform and present concepts at events in Jerusalem, London, Nairobi and Warsaw. Umati Capital is one of the four top solutions that will receive a cash award of $25,000 from Citi for their innovation. Others are Swave from the UK, Kytabu app from Kenya, and Trade It from US.
40 wireless CCTV cameras, control centre for Machakos level 5 hospital

Machakos Level 5 Hospital has been equipped with 40 wireless CCTV Cameras and a modern Control Centre to enhance security in the hospital. This was announced by Dr. Alfred Mutua, who is the Governor of Machakos County through his Facebook page. Through his page Dr. Mutua wrote, “In order to give our people quality and efficient health services we have upgraded and through the National Government equipped our Machakos Level 5 Hospital to a Model Referral Hospital. The hospital now boasts of the following: Telemedicine centre, 40 wireless CCTV cameras and control centre, Refurbished and equipped maternity and labour wards to international standards with hot water, Modernized Outpatient department, MRI Centre, Helipad for emergency cases.”
