Telegram Restricted In Kenya

Messaging app Telegram has been restricted across Kenya, with many users reporting that they can only access the platform using a VPN.

The outage is affecting users on major networks including Safaricom and Airtel with the app failing to load or refresh messages despite strong internet connections.

According to data from NetBlocks, Telegram access in Kenya has been deliberately restricted as the KCSE national exams continue. This follows a recurring trend of temporary internet limitations during exam periods, allegedly aimed at stopping the leak and sharing of exam papers.

While the restriction targets exam malpractice, it has also disrupted normal communication, affecting businesses, content creators, and community groups that rely on Telegram for coordination and customer support.

Authorities have not yet issued an official statement, but sources suggest the move is intended to safeguard exam integrity amid concerns over digital cheating networks.

The incident highlights an ongoing debate between security and digital freedom, balancing national interests with the need for open, reliable internet access.

As of this report, Telegram remains partially inaccessible in Kenya unless accessed through a VPN.
