NCC Approves 50% Tariff Increase For Telecom Operators

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has approved a 50 percent tariff increase for telecommunications operators, following requests from industry players. This decision aims to address the rising operational costs faced by operators and ensure the sustainability of the sector.
The increase, while not meeting the operators’ initial request for a 100 percent hike, was deemed necessary by the NCC to allow operators to invest in infrastructure, expand coverage, and improve service quality.
The Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) welcomed the NCC’s decision, acknowledging the significant challenges facing the industry. They emphasized that this adjustment would enable operators to continue investing in infrastructure and improving service quality for Nigerians.

The National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS) has threatened to challenge the tariff hike in court, arguing that the decision was made without adequate consultation with subscribers.
The Presidency defended the NCC’s decision, stating that the increase was necessary to keep the telecom industry viable. They emphasized that the approval does not automatically translate to a 50 percent price increase for consumers.
The telecom industry has operated with static prices for over a decade, despite rising operational costs. The NCC’s decision aims to strike a balance between supporting operators and protecting consumers. The NCC has also introduced stricter regulatory measures to ensure transparency and accountability within the sector.

This tariff adjustment is expected to have a significant impact on consumers nationwide, although the actual price increases will vary depending on individual operators and service plans.
