M-PESA Upgrade Boosts Capacity To 6,000 Transactions Per Second
Safaricom has unveiled the most significant enhancement of its M-PESA platform since 2015, introducing Fintech 2.0, a next-generation core system designed to strengthen resilience, expand capacity, and drive AI-powered innovation.
The upgrade increases the platform’s processing ability from 4,500 to 6,000 transactions per second, with room to scale to 12,000 transactions per second as demand grows. It also introduces active-active architecture across multiple hosting sites, delivering higher resilience and minimal service interruptions.
“This upgrade is a bold investment in the future of M-PESA and reaffirmation of our commitment to innovation, resilience and customer trust. By moving to Fintech 2.0, we are unlocking a platform that not only scales to meet today’s demands but also anticipates tomorrow’s opportunities,” said Dr. Peter Ndegwa, Group CEO, Safaricom.

Fintech 2.0 embeds advanced artificial intelligence to bolster fraud detection, enable self-healing capabilities, and power real-time monitoring. Its cloud-native foundation ensures faster performance, instant scalability, and quicker deployment of new products.
Since launching in 2007, M-PESA has evolved from a simple money transfer service into Africa’s largest fintech ecosystem, supporting payments, savings, credit, insurance, remittances, and e-commerce.
Safaricom says the new core platform will sustain that growth and support Africa’s expanding digital economy, while keeping its mission clear: to make financial services simple, accessible, and inclusive for all.

Congratulations for the upgrade, mine is to suggest improvements on the Mpesa Ratiba, to add a clause where users can specify the time of the deductions while creating a standing order.
Congratulations!
Continue to lead this sector.
