Kenya-Tanzania Launch Cross-Border Terrestrial Fiber Link
Kenya and Tanzania have officially launched the Dar-es-Salaam to Mombasa Terrestrial Fiber Link, a strategic cross-border project aimed at enhancing digital connectivity and communication across East Africa.
The launch took place at the Lunga Lunga–Horohoro border and was led by William Kabogo, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, , alongside his Tanzanian counterpart, Hon. Jerry William Silaa.
The project, implemented through a partnership between Kenya’s ICT Authority (ICTA) and Tanzania Telecommunications Corporation (TTLC), is designed to deliver high-speed internet, promote regional e-commerce, and bridge the digital divide between the two nations.

CS Kabogo reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to a digitally integrated Africa, saying the initiative will support job creation, innovation, and infrastructure development.
“Kenya remains firmly committed to building a connected and digitally empowered Africa. An Africa that creates jobs, fosters innovation, and strengthens infrastructure through strategic regional collaboration,” he said. He also emphasized the importance of harmonized policy and regulatory frameworks to secure and govern shared digital spaces.
Tanzania’s Hon. Silaa highlighted the importance of system interoperability, noting that the fiber link will ensure seamless communication and cooperation between the two countries.

Eng. John Kipchumba Tanui, Principal Secretary for ICT and the Digital Economy, praised the initiative as a key milestone in connecting Kenya and Tanzania and laying the foundation for robust, reliable digital infrastructure across the region.
The fiber link is expected to unlock new opportunities for cross-border trade, streamline public services, and accelerate East Africa’s broader digital transformation goals.
