During the premier SACCOtech summit at the Nairobi Serena hotel, a one-day event curated by CIO East Africa and that hosted over 100 practitioners from IT and SACCO domains, it emerged that occasional downtime experienced by deposit taking (DT) SACCOs was one of the greatest challenges and hindrance to their up-climb of the technology ladder.
This however is not just a hint peculiar to the SACCOs as evident from a recent statement published by the Nairobi Securities Exchange. “The Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) wishes to notify market participants, investors and the general public that trading activities are currently unavailable due to technical challenges occasioned by the unavailability of connectivity to the Central Depository System (CDS),” read the NSE statement.
An analysis by Eastra solutions found that this downtime, On-premise or Off-premise was directly caused by either data center power failures or Network Failures.

“31% of businesses that reported having outages said they were due to failures at third-party service providers including colocation, hosting and cloud vendors,” revealed the survey.
Eastra tasks to offer Uptime or what is technically the ‘High Availability’- a system that remains operationl for long hours without interruption. This, says David Kabundu the Managing Director-Eastra Solutions Ltd, is build on five pillars; Security, data centers, Technology, ITIL based Service Delivery and the famous Mission critical LOB application.
“Over the years, we (Eastra) have managed to successfully partner with several organizations, that cut across both private and public sectors, in delivering high quality solutions through turnkey projects,” says Kabundu attesting to the success of what is a unique tailormade sort of solutions for the SACCOs.
