Clonee, County Meath, will be the site for Facebook’s newest data center. This will be Facebook’s sixth data centre, first in Ireland and the second European data centre after Luleå in Sweden. The facility will become part of the infrastructure that enables billions of people to connect with the people and things they care about on Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and more.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on his Facebook page: “Clonee Data Center will be one of the most advanced and energy efficient data centers in the world. It will feature the latest server, storage and network designs developed through the Open Compute Project, and will be powered by 100% renewable energy.”
“One interesting engineering detail is that we’re cooling the facility with outdoor air, but because this is near the Irish Sea we’ll be using an indirect air cooling process to filter the salt from the air,” he added.

Facebook was given approval for a €200m data centre in Meath County after An Bord Pleanála rejected an appeal against the granting of planning permission for the facility but the original granting of permission was upheld.
In July Meath County Council approved the plans for the data centre to be built in Clonee in south Meath and it is to be built in two phases over the next decade on a site of 220 acres.
Jackie Maguire, CEO of Meath County Council said, “This council worked closely with the company and the IDA to deliver this important project for Ireland and for the county and it is encouraging to see that effort rewarded and to have our decision to grant permission endorsed.”
