David Mugonyi has been named the new Director General of the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA).
Mugonyi’s appointment was formalised by Felix Kosgei, Chief of Staff and Head of the Public Service and Eliud Owalo, Minister of ICT & Digital Economy following interviews conducted by the CA Board of Directors.
He previously worked as the Head of Communications at the National Assembly after moving from the Nation Media Group as a senior editor. The politically savvy and accomplished former journalist is currently the Head of the Presidential Communication Service and takes over the CA Director General position from Ezra Chiloba, who resigned from the role in October this year.
He holds a Master’s Degree in International Journalism from City University, UK, a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and a Diploma in Mass Communication from the University of Nairobi.
Mugonyi had worked for President Ruto’s communication team for the past decade when he served as the then Deputy President. He has earned a reputation as a communications strategist and is a trusted ally to the Head of State.
His appointment follows a restructuring of the Presidential Communication Service in January this year, and the resignation of the immediate former DG Ezra Chiloba in October 2023 marked the end of the latter’s two-year tenure.
The Director General is tasked with CA operations, provides overall leadership, and is the spokesperson of the Authority on all operational matters. Mugonyi’s appointment is expected to provide strategic leadership, set a clear vision for the body, and align its national and sectoral objectives.
