Ugandan Traders Launch E-Commerce Platform
Ugandan Association of startups and trade organizations over the weekend launched e-commerce platforms to exercise inclusive trade, create jobs across the world, and achieve economic growth, under one autonomous body.
The E-Trade and Startup Association was officially launched on Saturday, at Fairway Hotel in Kampala, by Hon. Godfrey Baluku Kabbyanga, the State Minister for ICT and National Guidance.
The Association was founded by Safeboda, Jumia, and Tugende among others, which in a short period grew to be a major contributor to job creation and national tax revenues.
Minister Kabbyanga applauded the E-Trade and Startup Association founders for bringing together industry players under one umbrella body, an avenue through which they can have a voice that the government can listen to when addressing any issues at hand. “The government will ensure there are good laws and infrastructure to enable businesses to thrive,” he said.
Addressing participants during the launch, the Chairperson of the Association, Ron Kawamara said, “The association comes at the right time when e-commerce is on its way to growth and development in Uganda and as key players, we need to unite and work closely. This will help mould and create the future we need as far as e-commerce is concerned.”
Michael Wilkerson, the co-founder, and CEO of Tugende Limited said the e-trade and startups under this Association will in a short time become some of the largest taxpayers and job creators in Uganda.
“Startups and e-commerce businesses are not just about elites, we are seeing digital opportunities providing livelihoods and opportunities for rural farmers as well as fishermen on lakes, the same way for Boda Boda riders, right up to the top senior civil servants,” he said.
Through the e-commerce platform, organizations can connect with potential partners, learn about trends and best practices, access up-to-date e-commerce data, and be informed of upcoming e-commerce events, and fundraising, among so many benefits.
E-commerce players have invested over $300 million in the last five years and revenues of between $10 million to $15 million, which are remitted to the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) annually.
