My journey into technology and cloud computing began in 2009 during my college years, where I gained hands-on experience in software development and deployment through collaboration with senior students on various projects. After graduating from Maseno University in 2012, I joined a security printing company in Thika as the ICT Assistant Manager. There, I spearheaded initiatives in business process automation and application development, focusing on improving operational efficiency through custom software solutions.

In 2017, I transitioned to freelancing, where I worked extensively on website design and web application development, primarily hosting solutions on traditional web hosting platforms. My career took a significant turn in late 2020 when a client approached me to re-platform their Ruby on Rails-based social media application to a PHP framework and migrate the hosting to Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

At the time, I had minimal experience with GCP, so I leveraged the expertise of a certified GCP Solutions Architect and online mentorship platforms like Codementor. The complexity of this project necessitated substantial “learning on the job,” which allowed me to gain insights into cloud computing architectures and the nuances of modern application hosting.

While exploring hosting options, AWS emerged as a compelling alternative due to its extensive suite of services, unmatched scalability, and innovative ecosystem. To overcome this, I implemented a structured and disciplined approach. I created a detailed schedule, ensuring I dedicated a minimum of one hour each day to focused study. Unlike the other certifications, which built upon areas I was already familiar with, this one demanded a deep understanding of machine learning concepts, algorithms, and their practical implementation on AWS services like Amazon SageMaker.

The challenge lay in bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge of machine learning, such as model training, hyperparameter optimization, and feature engineering and the hands-on application of these concepts within the AWS ecosystem. Topics like deploying scalable ML models, working with unstructured data, and leveraging services such as AWS Deep Learning AMIs and AWS Lambda for inferencing presented a steep learning curve.

Despite the difficulty, this certification turned out to be the most rewarding.
