Starlink Hikes Prices In Nigeria
In a significant move that has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s tech and internet communities, SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service has announced a substantial doubling of its monthly subscription fees. This decision, effective 31st October, has ignited a heated debate about the affordability and accessibility of high-speed internet in the country.
The standard service subscription has seen a steep increase from $22.8 (NGN 38,000) to $50 (NGN 75,000) monthly. Additionally, the mobile regional (roam unlimited) plan, allowing customers to use Starlink kits beyond their home or office within Nigeria, has risen from $29.4 (NGN 49,000) to $100 (NGN 167,000) monthly. The mobile global roaming service is now priced at a staggering $429.5 (NGN 717,000) monthly. Even new Starlink kits have experienced a 34 per cent price hike, going from $263.6 (NGN 440,000) to $353.4 (NGN 590,000).
Starlink has attributed the price hike to several factors, including rising operational costs, increase in demand and the need for infrastructural investments. Starlink claims that increased expenses for maintaining and expanding its satellite network, including fuel costs and satellite maintenance. The surge in demand for Starlink’s service in Nigeria has put pressure on bandwidth availability, forcing the company to optimize its pricing structure. Furthermore, Starlink’s ongoing investments in infrastructure, such as ground stations and user terminals, have added to the overall cost of providing the service.

The price hike has come as a bitter pill for many Nigerians who have relied on Starlink as a reliable internet alternative. While Starlink’s speeds and reliability have been praised, the increased cost may put it out of reach for a significant portion of the population in Nigeria.
The hike has also sparked a broader conversation about the state of internet infrastructure in Nigeria and the need for more affordable and accessible options. As the country continues to grow and develop, investment in internet infrastructure is crucial to support economic growth, education, and social development.
In Kenya, the situation with Starlink and internet connectivity is different. Safaricom, a leading telecommunications company, has a strong presence in the market and offers a range of internet services. While Starlink has also made inroads into Kenya, the competitive landscape has influenced its pricing strategy making it more affordable. It remains to be seen whether Starlink will follow a similar path in Kenya as it has in Nigeria.
