The second edition of, the University of Nairobi organized, Nairobi Innovation week kicked off today and is expected to host a total of 1,500 participants between the 1st and 5th of August 2016.
This announcement was made by the, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi, during the weeks leading up to the event, at a media engagement and dummy cheque hand over ceremonyat the University’s Vice Chancellor’s Parlour.
“I would like to announce that the details of the program for the Nairobi Innovation Week are now finalized and we will be hosting an expected 1500 people between the 1st and 5th of August 2016 at the University grounds,” said Prof. Mbithi.

Prof. Mbithi explained the format of this years event saying: “There will be a total of 13 pre-events happening on Monday the 1st and Tuesday the 2nd. These pre-events focus on Innovation Policy engagements and capacity building. There will be workshops, boot camps, Hackerthons, Makerthons, master classes and seminars.”
The event kicked off today with a series of events which included, talks given on topics such as:
‘Commercialization of Research and Innovations’, ‘Implication of the Basic Education Curriculum Reforms on tertiary education, especially university education in Kenya.’,’ Design Thinking’, ‘SenseWithCents’ and on IP Master Class.
“On the 3rd and 4th of August, we will have a series of key note presentations and panel discussions on a variety of topics,” added Prof. Mbithi.

According to the events programme, the opening ceremony will take place on the Wednesday, 3rd Aug 2016, where the following people will get a chance to speak:
Dr. Tonny Omwansa, Chairman, Nairobi Innovation Week, Prof. Peter M. F. Mbithi, Vice Chancellor, University of Nairobi, Dr. Idle Omar Farah, Chairman of Council, University of Nairobi, Jeremy Awori, CEO, Barclays Bank of Kenya (title sponsor), Werner Schultink, PhD, the Representative, UNICEF Kenya Country Office Representative (lead partner), Dr Vijoo Rattansi, Chancellor, University of Nairobi and Dr. Fred Matiang’i, CS, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
“Friday the 5th is a Startups Day. We will have an opportunity to engage with emerging and innovative companies who will showcase and pitch their solutions to attract funding and partners. We have invited banks, fund managers, venture capitalists and angel investors to start engaging with us and the startups with the aim of investing and supporting them,” he continued.
