2020 has been a year of changes, with the pandemic shaking up the world and turning many abnormal occurrences into the new normal. In the midst of this, Samsung has not disappointed. They have been at the centre of adapting and redesigning their gadgets to this new normal.
Pushing the tech limits, Samsung has added a total of six work-and-play hubs on to its Galaxy ecosystem. The smartwatch, earbuds, a tablet, a Note 20 phone, the Galaxy Z Fold2 and now the Galaxy S20 FE. Boundaries between work and play are blurred by the Galaxy S20 FE, which is the Fun Edition and its close sister-phone, the Galaxy Note 20.
During this faster life, do not ask how the world has changed, but rather how Samsung has changed your world by adapting high tech to everyday usage allowing you to live a full life. Bold and beautiful, the S20 FE defines what is possible in the mobile communication industry. It offers novel ways to communicate. Its intelligent connections allow you to talk to all anywhere, anytime.

Work hard, play hard and live easy, it is your choice. You can keep your kids at ‘school’ at home; create a gym anywhere; create music or keep abreast with the world any time.
“The S20 FE is a computer and gaming console,” said Mary Lee, the Samsung Strategy and Partnership Manager as she rightly says this phone was energized by work and inspired by play.
A trio of cameras

The S20 FE has three cameras on the back, a main 12MP dual pixel sensor with an f/1.8 aperture and OIS, a 12MP ultra-wide and 8MP 3x tele camera with OIS. This trio is professional, no filter-worthy shot with ease. Frame the scene with the wide-angle camera and go wider with the Ultra-Wide Camera or zoom in up with the 3x Optical Zoom on the Telephoto Camera. There’s also a 32MP camera at the front that takes your selfies and videos to a whole new level.
Samsung has worked to improve the AI processing in the snaps, adding several filters. With bigger pixels and enhanced camera AI, the rear camera on Galaxy S20 FE pulls in light even in the dark so your shots come out detailed and colourful. It shoots multiple frames at once, processing them into one clear nighttime photo. The camera lets you take steady shots on the move. However, one feature lost in the move from the regular S20 is the lack of 8K recording, leaving you with 4K max.
A brief history of its design
The S20 FE ditches the glass back for plastic. You won’t notice the plastic feel, especially on such an affordable phone. It has a frosted (matt) finish that is smooth to the touch. The front is Gorilla Glass, IP68 for water and dust resistance, and it will stand up to 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes. The sides are made of aluminium for a firm stronger frame. It comes in six beautiful colours, including a very on-trend navy blue and a striking red.

The display
The S20 FE has a 6.5” screen in comparison to the 6.7” for the Note 20 and the bigger 6.9” screen for the Note 20 Ultra. However, all give a vivid, bright and dynamic visibility that is 25 per cent above ordinary whether indoors or outdoors. The 6.5″ Full HD+ Infinity-O Display has barely visible bezels surrounding the flat edges, and a super small punch hole for the camera. It means a massive screen that makes your gaming, streaming, and video-calling way more tolerable.
The S20 FE has a high-quality 120Hz panel, giving you super-smooth scrolling. It has a 240Hz sampling rate too, so gaming should be extremely responsive. Twice as fast as many smartphone screens, the Super AMOLED display refreshes at the super-smooth 120Hz rate to keep action clear and touch response fast. Whether you’re just scrolling down the timeline or going through your gallery, the screen moves quickly with an unnoticeable shudder.
About that battery life
The 4500mAh battery life ensures a smooth operation for 24 standby hours and more, given its intelligence to save its power for when you really need it. While the intelligent battery will give you over 50 per cent charge in only 30 minutes with the 25W Super-Fast Charger. The phone is also compatible with fast wireless charging 2.0. You need to just set down your phone for a supercharged power-up in a flash.
AP, RAM and Storage
The S20 FE has fast data speeds and cloud-based content with the latest S20 chipset innovation and 6GB of RAM. All this plus the enhanced NPU takes performance to a new level, so switching from app to app is seamless, live streams come through clear with no annoying buffers. Yet with 128GB built-in storage, and the ability to store up to 1TB more on a microSD card. The only limit to what you can store is what you can create and download.
The phone is trendy; a sustainable allegiance that combines the known and the alien to create a new experience.
“I’ve seen the alien!” one Samsung fan exclaimed.
The “alien” has indeed come to roost for Samsung users. What with the incredible voice command; the swift synching across the Galaxy devices; the seamless ability to switch the device from console to PC to mobile capabilities and many other features! All these emphasise the value of the Galaxy ecosystem: Giving you a continuous space wherever, on whichever device to maximize convenience and productivity.
The final verdict is in
The gadget ticks most of the relevant boxes. The only hurdle here is the cost – Kshs 79,999. The pre-orders started on 9 September 2020. A worthwhile gadget compared to similar phones.
