Safaricom Ethiopia Expands 4G Network To Western Ethiopia
Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia PLC has officially launched its network in Nekemte City, marking another step in its mission to extend reliable 4G connectivity across the country. This expansion into western Ethiopia follows closely on the heels of its recent network rollout in the Somali Region.
The launch in Nekemte brings 32 advanced towers and a robust fiber backbone, enhancing connectivity for residents and businesses. It also introduces M-PESA digital financial services to the region, with the aim to boost economic opportunities. Five new distributor shops have already created 250 jobs, supporting the local economy.
“The expansion of our network to the vibrant city of Nekemte, marks a crucial step in rolling out of our services to Western Ethiopia. Following our extensive growth in East Ethiopia, Nekemte represents a new chapter to our mission of connecting all of Ethiopia. With our fast 4G connectivity and M-PESA digital financial services, we aim to empower residents and foster new opportunities in this region,” said Wim Vanhelleputte, CEO of Safaricom Ethiopia, at the launch ceremony.

In line with its commitment to community development, Safaricom Ethiopia is donating 20 laptops and four Wi-Fi routers with six months of free unlimited internet to two high schools in Nekemte. This contribution is valued at USD 8,041 (one million birr).
The Mayor of Nekemte, His Excellency Misganu Tulu, also praised the initiative, recognizing its positive impact on the community, “Our community has faced telecom connectivity challenges over the past few years, which has hindered business and daily life. Safaricom Ethiopia’s presence will significantly improve access to reliable telecom services, creating a foundation for economic growth and new opportunities in Nekemte.”
Before the Nekemte launch, Safaricom extended its network to the Somali Region, bringing reliable coverage to towns like Gode, Kebridehar, and Degehabur. This growth is a reflection of the company’s endeavors to improve connectivity and supporting communities throughout Ethiopia.
