The Safaricom PLC Annual General Meeting for the closure of the financial year of 2019, was held on 30thAugust, at the Bomas of Kenya from 11.00am. The meeting necessitated a discussion on agenda’s ranging from customer growth to the update on the company’s financial statements. A major topic of conversation then moved to the hosting of considerations on the approval of a final dividend, and the reappointment of auditors before opening the floor to the public, allowing a quorum.
Mr. Nicolas Nganga, was at hand to say “that shareholders and customers have had to make difficult choices, on how to spend their money, through the shifting usage of products and services, as we adapted to try and continue delivering the best services.” Before outlining how all Safaricom shareholders are entitled to attend and vote at the meeting.
Safaricom had recorded a steady increase in eco growth, but a slumped to a slow recovery from the depressed private sector. Legislative and regulatory concerns were also brought out due to the rapidly changing telecommunications sector. The Safaricom business strategy that will be employed in the upcoming sector, according to Mr Nganga, will be guided by customer needs. He then took the moment to thank shareholders for the time, money and effort they have put into Safaricom.

The interim CEO, Michael Joseph, said “It is my role, to give our customers the value they deserve.” He further went on to indicate the substantial profit Safaricom had made, generating Ksh214 billion in revenue, and ksh63 billion in profit. Defining the industry as undergoing a digital transformation, he went on to say how Safaricom is adapting its focus to be more adaptive and flexible towards the needs of shareholders and customers.
Additionally, he went on to reassure the shareholders that their data is safe, and that Safaricom is working with tech partners to build and maintain the ecosystem. Before he mentioned the way in which IOT is going to be a big business.
Safaricom has been the central mobile services provider to Kenyans for nearly two decades, utilizing ICT and mobile money channels to reach and engage its customers.
