Role Of Standards In Fostering Innovation In Kenya
The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) recently hosted its annual CEO Breakfast Roundtable where they emphasized the importance of standards in catalyzing business growth, enhancing efficiency, promoting innovation, and fostering sustainable development.
According to Bernard Njiraini, Managing Director of KEBS, standards are the bedrock of successful businesses, driving innovation, productivity, and quality. By adopting these practices, organizations not only become more competitive but also contribute to the overall growth and sustainability of the economy.
Kenya has made significant progress in its quality infrastructure, ranking higher in the Global Quality Infrastructure Index (GQII) Report 2021. This progress has been attributed to KEBS’ specific interventions under the Technical services pillar of its 2022-2027 Strategy, with a strong focus on expanding system certification and training services scopes.

One key initiative includes rolling out a certification scheme on ISO 37101:2016, targeting cities, counties, and sub-counties for sustainable development in communities. Adopting ISO 37101 will result in more sustainable, resilient, and smart communities, making them attractive investment destinations.
KEBS has also identified the need to prioritize the uptake of Management System Standards in organizations. According to Njiraini, “By embracing standards today, businesses can set themselves up for long-term success and growth, contributing to a more prosperous future for Kenya. Let’s work together to harness the power of standards for the betterment of our economy and society”
