With businesses facing an array of unprecedented difficulties in 2020, data protection, cloud computing and cyber security regulation is shaping the post-COVID future. Whatever changes may follow as a legacy of the outbreak, data protection, and security will hold their position as key considerations for doing business, and remaining in business.
The silver lining to operating in a new normal is developing a new mindset. “every government and entity across the world is engaged in one form of another of understanding and appropriating some aspects of the cyber systems and technologies.” read a statement from Monica Juma, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Defense.
COVID-19 is one such emergency, which has pushed organisations across the globe to adapt to a new style of working, and to an extension, a new aspects of cyber security. While they were already struggling to embrace diversity and inclusion in the workforce, they suddenly had to adapt to a new cyber challenges with very little notice.

“Today there is no doubt that the outer space or cyber world is humanities next frontier of both security and development. Historically, space has been a defence and intelligence domain but today, we see a range of other actors and interests with the space, including commercialisation of the space.” said Juma’s statement. Bringing to light how in a business sense, the new normal is how we usher in a new way of working, taking lessons from the past months and deciding what to keep and what to throw out. How we work, the role of business in society and the likelihood of similar pandemic events happening again are all things that affect what the new normal will be.
The crises may have paved way for uncertainties, but it has also created opportunities for sectors to emerge and grow, while some will fall and vanish if not properly managed and strategised as the companies who will stand firm in this era will be those that implemented risk management as part of their business strategy.
“The much needed pool of expertise and ideas in the digital space, can help us better understand the evolving dynamics, the risks upon us, as well as the opportunities this new world presents us with.” concluded Juma. Exemplifying how the train must be prepared to chug along now. In the new normal, companies are staring into an abyss of deep water. The waters are treacherous and swarming with Covid-19 sharks. Still, they must take a deep breath and continue to dive into the end of the global pandemic
