NSSF has today launched a nationwide recruitment drive targeting new members in the informal sector, counties and the youth through its mobile phone application.
During this recruitment drive, NSSF will leverage its mobile app to deepen penetration among the youth, who have a high level of interaction with smartphones.
The recruitment drive will cover Nairobi, Nakuru, Kisumu, Kisii, Mombasa, Machakos, along with 20 other targeted counties. Officially starting in Nairobi, the effort was flagged off by NSSF Chairman, hon. Gideon Ndambuki.

The app also allows members in the counties to access their statements through the phone and use mobile money to pay their contributions without having to go queue at the offices. New members and employers can also register at the comfort of their phones and desktops using the app.
Hon Ndambuki said that an increase in membership and contributions would help Kenyans plan more prudently for their sunset years.
“Kenya has one of the highest levels of old age dependency in the world, estimated at 56 percent, while old age poverty rate stands at 55 per cent. This underscores the timeliness of our recruitment drive,” noted Hon. Ndambuki.

This nationwide recruitment drive by NSSF comes against the backdrop of slow growth in formal sector membership due to massive layoffs that characterized the formal sector in 2016. NSSF currently has 2.3 million active members and targets to increase this by 1.5 million through the recruitment drive.
The move is also aimed at boosting Kenya’s saving pool for economic growth. Kenya’s savings as percentage of GDP stands at 15 percent against a target of 25 percent. By boosting the level of savings, NSSF intends to help the government get a domestic source of borrowing as opposed to external borrowing.
