Nanyuki Cottage Introduces Grid-tied Solar Panels For Reliability Green Energy
When a power outage occurs at a hospital in Nanyuki as in the rest of the country, urgent care or other medical facilities are severely affected. This has proven to be life-threatening.
Vital services and equipment like medical ventilators, incubators, and dialysis machines rely on electricity to function—and patients rely on them to survive. Amid erratic power supply within semi-urban areas in the country, critical services struggle under the crippling effects of the high cost of energy in Kenya. It is against this backdrop that Nanyuki Cottage Hospital has taken a bold step to ensure reliable power supply and a drastic reduction in their operational costs as they have partnered with Distributed Power Africa (DPA) for the rollout of a solar power solution at their hospital in Mt Kenya region.
“The multi-specialty Tertiary Care Hospital has been in operation for the last 100 years in Mount Kenya Region with a rich medical history and is known for caring for the elderly, and for offering high-quality healthcare at affordable prices,” commented Dr. Anup Das, Chief Executive Officer at Nanyuki Cottage Hospital. He added that it is in line with the facility’s transformation agenda that it has adopted modern healthcare technologies and software geared towards better healthcare provision and with a focus on sustainable solutions, starting with green energy to pioneer development in health care services across Kenya.

The hospital will, moving forward, be using solar energy solutions to be deployed by DPA and tailored to the hospital’s energy needs with a design to increase efficiencies. It will be grid-tied with photovoltaic (PV) with 80 kWp capacity, mounted on their rooftop.
“Working with Nanyuki Cottage Hospital is an exciting opportunity for DPA as we can demonstrate that solar power is a sustainable “green” strategy that can definitely improve efficiencies,” said Moncef Mettiji, DPA CEO for East & West Africa.
Moncef is certain that the solution will not only allow the customer to run their operations on environmentally friendly energy but will save the institution in costs.

DPA’s track record of execution in Kenya includes solar projects for East Africa Data Centre, Ecobank branches, and Aga Khan Medical Centre. Regionally, the renewable energy company operates solar plants for several Commercial & Industrial customers, such as Schweppes 1MW, Tanganda Tea 1.8 MW, Liquid Intelligent Technologies Midrand 1.2 MW, and several Massmart and Shoprite retail stores.
Nanyuki Cottage Hospital is a not-for-profit institution providing all health care services to the local community. Meeting the emerging needs for -Critical Care – ICU, HDU and Trauma services, all outpatient services with an Accident and Emergency unit. With solar, the entire facility will be able to run more efficiently.
