Purity Mutuku has been recognised internationally as the most innovative librarian in the world. A librarian at the Kenya National Library Services (KNLS) in Nakuru, Ms Mutuku was recognised for her use of ICT to transform the lives of library users.
Ms Mutuku developed an innovative mathematics idea dubbed ‘Mathwizz’ in 2015 which led to the recognition.The award by Electronic Information for Libraries (EIFL) recognises public librarians with innovative programmes that to improve lives in their communities.
“I am so happy. I did not know my idea would make such a big impact on the community and be recognised worldwide,” said Mutuku to a local media house.

Ms Mutuku said that she developed the idea during a workshop held in Nairobi that brought together librarians in all public universities.
The innovation allows teachers and learners to use special memonic devices that teach mathematics formulas using animations and worksheets.

Ms Mutuku was listed among the top six most innovative librarians in the world and will be awarded during the library festival to be held in Denmark at Dokkl-Aarhus’s library from June 11 to 14.
