Makerere University Students Win Huawei African ICT Competition in South Africa
Makerere University ICT students have won first place in the 2022 Huawei ICT Competition for Sub Saharan Africa, beating 19 Countries and 36 teams and thus advancing to the Huawei ICT Global finals in China in May 2022.The state minister for higher education Hon. Dr. JC Muyingo, awarded the students and congratulated them upon winning first place and wishing them all the best in the global competitions in China.
President Museveni congratulated the team in a tweet he posted on Sunday, April 10th, and said: “I congratulate the Makerere University students for winning the Huawei ICT Competition for Sub Saharan Africa, having beaten 19 Countries and 36 teams. I call upon you to use these skills to innovate and create jobs for yourselves and others and I wish you luck in the global competitions.”
Makerere University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe also congratulated his students via Twitter and wrote: “Uganda’s flag rises high again as Makerereans win the Huawei continental ICT competition, at a grand finale event held in South Africa. I congratulate the team on this great representation.”

Last month, Huawei announced the results of the 2021/22 Sub Saharan Africa Huawei ICT Competition that saw Makerere and Muni University topple 15 African Countries.
Globally the Huawei ICT Competition has covered over 80 countries, with 150,000 participants from more than 2,000 universities and colleges.Launched in the African region just six years ago, the competition has developed into the largest ICT skills competition in Africa. With a series of talent ecosystem campaigns in Sub-Saharan Africa, including the ICT competition, Huawei hopes to skill up more than 700,000 ICT professionals by next year.
