Preceding the global Blockchain Hackathon-Africa Virtual competition, held on the 15th and 16th October 2018 and whose challenge was the creation of an application on the EOSIO platform, winners are set to represent Africa at the global stratus.
The event that was organized by Block.one, a provider of business-grade technology solutions, including blockchain software development – as one of five events leading up to a grand finale of the EOSIO Global Blockchain Hackathon at the end of the year, drew together competitors from across the African continent.
Three teams from Africa, two from Kenya emerged top and will be representing the African continent at the global hackathon to be held in South Africa. The two teams from Kenya are Ubuntu Energy Ledger and BTax from USIU-Africa.

Ubuntu Energy ledger is creating decentralized energy data trading platform for African countries, based on the EOSIO blockchain platform. BTax is developed with the aim to eliminate corruption in Africa. It will introduce a transparent financial eco-system that would prevent corruption, seal tax evasion loopholes and deter tax fraud.
The third team, Africonnect, is developing a solution that will merge SMEs on the Blockchain, enabling small businesses from regions within the continent merge as a single large.
These three teams will proceed to South Africa in December to compete for $ 500,000 with other teams from Hong Kong, Sydney, San Francisco and London. The grand finale will be a pitch competition and demo day for winning participants of the prior hackathons to compete for the grand prize. The participants were judged based on creativity, scalability, creativity and utilization of EOSIO blockchain technology.

The EOS Global Hackathon series is a first-of-its-kind event in the world of blockchain that serves Block.one’s goal of building a more secure and connected world through hosting a series of initiatives designed to find and give a platform to the most visionary architects of decentralization in the world. The global series runs from June through the end of 2018. The four in-person events will be followed by a grand finale pitch competition that puts the best applications under the spotlight.
