Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) recently appointed Mucai Kunyiha as the new National Chairman to lead the organization for a two-year term.
Kunyiha who has been serving as the Vice-Chair from July 2018, takes over from Sachen Gudka whose term ended and who remains an Ex-Officio member of the Board, playing an advisory role in directing the growth of the Association.
Kunyiha’s appointment comes at a time when the manufacturing sector across the world is in the midst of yet another major transformation following the need to optimize efficiency, quality, and service delivery in the entire production value chain.

While Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta declared manufacturing as a top priority investment area for the country to drive economic growth, it is the leadership of KAM and indeed the sector players along with technology solution providers who will demystify and indeed accelerate digital adoption and transformation in this critical sector of the economy.
In anticipation that the leadership will raise the tenor of discourse on industrialization by seizing the confluence of several technologies, the sector players; among them, the Ministry of Industrialization, Ministry of ICT and Innovation as well as Ministry of Transport will be eager to collaborate in the journey of optimizing smart, flexible supply chains in factories and distribution models. The effort is lined to make quicker and smarter decisions while minimizing the overall production costs in automated industries.

Although, how this trend will play out remains to be seen since the biggest players in the manufacturing industry are already making changes and putting big money into embracing digital transformation to pivot to Industry 4.0 – a wide suite of technologies that are lined to enhance competitiveness in the country’s manufacturing sector and improve the sector’s competitiveness.
Speaking at KAM Head Office, Kunyiha noted that the manufacturing sector is an integral part of Kenya’s sustainable growth and development adding, “The road ahead for manufacturing and the economy will not be easy. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is yet to be determined as it continues to unleash damage locally and globally. It demands big changes which we must explore urgently and diligently, including the development of rebound strategies and policies that will see the economy rebound and increase the sector’s contribution to GDP exponentially.”

Kunyiha, a lawyer by profession noted that he will focus on advocating for the development of coherent policies that support industrial growth, pushing for predictability in fiscal and legislative regulations and support for SMEs through policy advocacy and championing Kenya’s circular economy through enhanced partnerships, driving the waste management agenda through the Kenya Plastic Action Plan. He is currently the Group Managing Director of Kzanaka Ltd, which includes Cooper K-Brands Ltd, Analabs Ltd, Mashiara Park, and Qaribu Inn.

Rajan Shah, the CEO of Capwell Group of Companies which includes Capwell Industries Ltd, was appointed Kunyiha’s new Vice-Chair. He has served on the KAM Board in various capacities and also serves as the Regional Chairman of the KAM Central Region.
