icolo.io has broken ground for a new data center in Nairobi which will sustain the need of expansion of local data centers as most are not well equipped.
Ranjith Cherickel, founder and CEO of icolo.io said and also stated that space was also another reason for setting up in another data center.
icolo.io will build the data center in two phases which will be able to provide 268 cabinets for customer use with up to 800KW of available IT power. This data center is a purpose-built building that spans over 27,000sqft of built up area with redundant power complete with its own back-up generators, precision cooling and pre-cabled inter connect infrastructure.

icolo.io’s open access data center will provide colocation services i.e. rack space, power, cooling and physical security and it will provide remote hand services and high level technical support to for their customers.
“With the unparalleled growth in the internet and the explosion of digital data in Kenya, we are very excited to build a truly carrier neutral data center in the heart of the African digital economy. With our new data center, we are able to offer redundancy, reliability, choice of connectivity partners and flexibility to our colocation customers” said Ranjith.
The Kenyan startup stated that the first phase of the data center will be ready in May 2017 and construction on the second phase will start later in the year. With this being the second data center in Kenya, Mombasa One data center (MBA1) will be customer ready in March 2017.

“With the combination of a carrier neutral facility and the undersea cables, Mombasa will fast become the Gateway to Africa for all the international carriers and cloud players looking to build infrastructure in Africa,” concluded Ranjith.
icolo.io estimetes the cost of building the data centers to about 1.4 billion shillings, Nairobi will be about 800 million shillings as it has two phases and also more data floor racks compared to Mombasa.
