At a recent women in technology (WIT) forum, organized by Sylvia Mukasa- the Nairobi Chapter Lead, Women in Tech Africa and CEO GlobalX Innovaions Labs, women delegates unanimously agreed to break the Queen Bee Syndrome in the IT industry that is hitherto an underlying factor towards the lag in budding more women into the space.
TechWomen Fellowship is an Initiative of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs launched by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2011.

Speaking at the Women In Tech summit was Mucha Mlingo, an Award winning keynote speaker from Zimbabwe who in condemning women leaders who embrace the Queen Bee Syndrome at work said, “There is a special place in hell for women who do not help other women grow career wise.”
Themed to diversify the IT work space by involving women in the practice of IT, the forum hosted women IT professionals from the continent and beyond who paved way for would be further deliberation at the forthcoming #Hernovation conference in Naivasha.

Up for deliberation during the 20th November event at the Lake Naivasha Resort include; Diversity, inclusion and equity in the modern day corporate bodies around the world.
Laura Chite, CEO CIO East Africa and a Co-Founder for Hernovation said, “Hernovation aligns discussions which hold the key to unlocking insightful and measurable progress in budding more women into the It work space in increasingly digital world.” Adding; “Such patriarchal cultures of work discourages women from rising to the top corporate positions.”

Defined as a situation where high ranking women in positions of authority treat the women who work below them more critically than their male counterparts, the Queen Bee Syndrome is an enemy of women’s progress and by extension, a confirmation of the ‘women are their own enemies’ cliche’.
At a different women’s forum in Nairobi, Dr Shikoh Gitau, the Head of Products, Alpha at Safaricom advised women to belong to a ‘race’ that embraced other women regardless of their differences. That women must love and mentor one another to be able to achieve the hyped inclusivity at work; not just in the IT industry alone.

The Hernovation forum was premiered in November 2018, and purposes to heighten the momentum of empowerment of women by exploring ways and means of involving more men in creating inclusive work, consistent connections and celebrating women in innovation.
As gender equality continues being viewed as a major issue in the corporate world, women are ironically, seen as being ‘every bit as capable leaders as men’. A survey conducted by Pew Research Center, lists several areas where women are equally as good if not stronger than men both in leadership and business.
