The annual regional CIO100 East African Summit and Awards 2019 has officially kicked off at Lake Naivasha Resort, Naivasha.
Commencing with an exclusive CEO roundtable breakfast, the CIO100 Summit and Awards is themed Harnessing the power of automation.
“We are honoured to host you for this exclusive breakfast session,” said Laura Chite, CEO CIO East Africa. Adding, “Conversations on matters data regulation are powerful and cannot be avoided. The session that largely discoursed the role of policy and regulation in catalysing innovation was attended by top-notch industry shapers in the IT space from across East Africa.

Speaking on data regulation and policy, George Njuguna, CIO at Safaricom PLC said, “Data is key and a vital resource for making money. It is important therefore that it be regulated.”
Sammy Nyambu, Partner and Digital Solutions, Financial Services and Risk Advisory Lead at EY noted that the Data Protection Law 2019 set clear obligations of the Data Commissioner. “The newly signed Data Protection Law will set a direction with a Data Commissioner to enhance the governance and organisation of data. Kenya being a tech hub should have stern data regulation to enhance innovation.”
The Data Protection Law 2019 discussion is meant to carry on throughout the two-day symposium.

The prestigious event shall be officially opened by Joseph Mucheru, EGH, MBS – Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of ICT, Innovation and Youth Affairs, and shall end with the Awards gala on the night of 22 November 2019.
