The employee mindset needs a change. When you’re an employee, you often think you are expected to only do what you are told. This sometimes makes you feel as if your knowledge is not always as valuable. The employee mindset does not scratch the surface of challenging leadership or other team members to enhance or create a new, innovative way to perform an existing process.
The switch is in the perspective, the key is a branding mindset. “Don’t take courses for their own sake. Take courses that can move across industries. Courses such as project management.” explains Mary Waceke, an executive life coach.
“A career is your ability to be productive; package this and remain productive. It is the cumulative experience of competencies you have acquired. You’re the one who builds your capital and market worth by becoming your own agent. You are your greatest asset, explains waceke.
A branding mindset allows you to think of your expertise and knowledge like a product or service.

Brands offer unique products or experiences that you can’t get anywhere else. There is no difference in the professional world: You have to go to work and provide expertise and unique experiences with your team members or clients that no one else offers.
This personal branding can be formulated in the way you deliver your task, how you dress, or how you conduct yourself in meetings. “Be you, but a sharper you,” emphasises Waceke.
As you build your array of personal talents and brand, authenticity is a great asset. When you align with organisations that embrace your personality and expertise as a college graduate, professional, or retiree, it creates a smooth transition for evolution into who you are slowly getting ready to become.
