The three-day training seeks to acquaint lawyers with knowledge on emerging regulatory issues in the ICT sector such as cyber security and e-commerce and is envisaged to boost the application and enforcement of the existing laws within the ICT industry.
The initiative, which will provide the much-needed skills to respond to the dynamic and fast paced nature of the ICT sector and the associated challenges, is also a platform for engagement between the Authority and legal practitioners on relevant issues — and it will chart pathways for moving the sector forward.
‘The ubiquitous nature of ICTs has presented us with new challenges that we’re hitherto never anticipated. Replication of such partnerships in other sectors of the economy would greatly contribute to knowledge and skills transfer as well as catalyze the adoption of global best practices that will foster national progress,” said Broadcasting and Telecommunication Principal Secretary, Mr. Sammy Itemere during the launch.

“Many African countries are still in the process of domesticating laws on ICT and related policy, cyber-crimes, electronic transactions, data protection and such, the full benefit of these laws have not been brought to bear on socio- economic development due to a lack of know-how on international best practices of interpretation and implementation and application of these laws,” said ITU Regional Director for Africa Mr. Andrew Rugege.
CA Director General Mr. Francis Wangusi noted that lawyers play a key role within the justice system and the Authority would undertake week-long seminars for various stakeholders in the sector until June 2018.
