“Let me reiterate that the Authority is committed to serve Kenyans in its regulatory mandate, in order to transform the lives of our people through ICTs. The National Cybersecurity Center (NCC) is Kenya’s national cyber crime management trusted point of contact, and is globally recognized. Members of the public are therefore advised to contact CA’s National Cybersecurity Center to report such incidences or seek advice on potential cyber threats,” this was said through a press statement, issued by the CA, written by the Authority’s DG, Francis Wangusi.
“Based on our mandate on national cyber crime management stipulated in the Kenya Information and communications Act 1998 (KICA), CA continues to offer advice on cybersecurity matters nationally and to coordinate national response to cyber incidents through its National Cybersecurity Center (NCC),” he added.
The press statement was issued following discussions circulating on social media and other online forums about an act, which compromised the blog site and Twitter handle of the University of Nairobi and the alleged demand for ransom by the hackers. The statement explained what actions were taken by the above mentioned institutions after the attack, stating:

On 11th July 2016, at around 5:00pm, UoN blog site was defaced by hackers;
One of the UoN Twitter handles was also compromised and used to share a few blog site usernames and passwords;
The Authority through the collaborative efforts of the University of Nairobi and the CS’s NCC has since contained the cyber attack. We are further making all efforts to ensure full restoration of any affected systems and resumption of normal operations.

Wangusi took time to explain further how cybercrime is a problem that requires everyone’s input to solve. “We would like to remind the public that cyber crime is a major global challenge, and one that requires the concerted effort of all stakeholders globally, including the general public. We wish to urge the public, and all stakeholders, to offer support to the government as we strive to ensure a safer Kenya cyber space for our prosperity and socio-economic development,” Wangusi added.
