Advancing Sustainable Energy Solutions For Climate Action
Sustainable energy solutions play a pivotal role in combating climate change and fostering sustainable development across Africa. These encompass a spectrum of approaches, from harnessing renewable energy sources to adopting energy-efficient technologies, all critical in advancing the objectives outlined in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 7 and 13: Affordable and Clean Energy, and Climate Action.
To illustrate, Orb Energy, a 2013 Zayed Sustainability Prize winner in the Energy category, advances SDG 7 by providing affordable solar systems in India and Africa. Collaborating with financial institutions, they reduce carbon emissions in alignment with SDG 13.
Similarly, Electriciens sans Frontières, a 2020 Prize winner in the Energy category, spearheads renewable energy projects in Africa, benefitting 220,000 people in 2022. Their work reduces carbon emissions, aligning with SDG 13, while improving water and electricity access, healthcare and education.

Given Africa’s rapidly growing population and its rich reservoir of climate-friendly power resources, the continent emerges as a focal point for sustainable energy initiatives. However, it also faces disproportionate impacts from climate change, with communities grappling with extreme weather events, severe droughts, rising sea levels, and food insecurity.
For instance, prolonged droughts in East Africa have led to food and water shortages, affecting millions of people, and threatening agricultural production. In West Africa, heavy rainfall and flooding have displaced populations and damaged infrastructure, exacerbating poverty and food insecurity. These extreme weather events highlight the urgent need for sustainable solutions to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate. As such, addressing climate change and promoting sustainable energy solutions are not only essential for the continent’s development but also for achieving the SDGs on a global scale.

Eco-conscious energy solutions are critical for Africa’s development and its efforts to combat climate change. These solutions not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also improve access to affordable energy, create green jobs and enhance energy security. By transitioning to sustainable energy sources, African countries can reduce their dependence on fossil fuels, mitigate the impacts of climate change, and achieve sustainable development goals.
Organisations, such as Orb Energy and Electriciens sans Frontières have been at the forefront of providing environmentally friendly power solutions in Africa. Through their innovative approaches, both entities are not only addressing the continent’s energy needs but also contributing to global efforts to combat climate change. Solar energy solutions by Orb Energy and renewable energy projects by Electriciens sans Frontières are prime examples of how innovative thinking and technological advancements are driving positive change in Africa’s energy landscape.
By incorporating energy-efficient technologies and promoting sustainable practices, the India-based entity operating in Nairobi, Kenya, Kenya is helping communities reduce their carbon footprint and adapt to a changing climate. Orb Energy’s holistic approach to sustainable energy, including flexible credit options and microfinance collaborations, serves as a model for other African countries seeking to advance climate action and sustainable development.

Electriciens sans Frontières has taken an innovative approach to sustainable energy, revolutionising access to electricity in underserved communities worldwide. Established in 1986, the NGO was formed to deliver vital energy services to areas with unreliable electricity access. Since its inception, the organisation has evolved into a significant contributor to global efforts to extend sustainable energy access, particularly in remote rural regions isolated from national power grids. Their primary focus is on deploying renewable energy solutions, especially solar energy, which has become increasingly feasible and economical. By prioritising renewable resources and adhering to energy efficiency standards, they aim to mitigate environmental impacts. Their projects include installing solar panels, microgrids, and improving electrical infrastructure to power schools, health centres, and public spaces, providing immediate benefits like lighting and improved healthcare, and fostering long-term community development.
In 2022, they made a significant impact on the African continent by completing 100 projects that benefited 220,000 people. In Togo, their solar energy project has improved access to water and electricity, reducing the burden of water chores for women, enhancing healthcare services, and boosting educational opportunities. Another project in the Sahel region showcases solar-powered irrigation systems that increase agricultural productivity and reduce physical labour, benefiting smallholder farmers, particularly women.
Café Lumière–one of their flagship initiatives, addresses the low electricity access rates in rural Madagascar, Benin and Togo. Their multi-service energy platforms provide sustainable and scalable solutions, enhancing economic growth and improving living conditions through reliable electricity.
Electriciens sans Frontières adopts an integrated approach, engaging local communities from planning to maintenance, ensuring project sustainability and efficiency. They prioritise training and capacity building, empowering locals to maintain and expand energy infrastructure. Through their efforts, they illuminate remote areas while advancing sustainable development and climate action, showcasing how innovative energy solutions can create a brighter future for everyone.
The Impact of Sustainable Energy Solutions
The impact of sustainable energy solutions like those offered by Orb Energy and Electriciens sans Frontières improve the lives of millions of people and drive climate action and sustainable development in Africa. Winning the Zayed Sustainability Prize has further amplified their impact, enabling them to scale up their operations and reach even more communities.
Advancing sustainable energy solutions is essential for advancing climate action in Africa. Through the innovative work of organisations like Orb Energy and Electriciens sans Frontières, Africa is making significant strides towards a sustainable energy future. By continuing to support and invest in these energy initiatives, Africa can mitigate the impacts of climate change and achieve a sustainable and more prosperous future for all.
Calling All Changemakers
The Zayed Sustainability Prize is now accepting submissions from SMEs, NPOs, and high schools across Africa with sustainable solutions that meet the criteria of impact, innovation and inspiration. The Prize highly encourages you to apply for the $5.9 million Prize, with each organisational winner across the Health, Food, Energy, Water and Climate Action categories eligible to receive $1 million to expand the scope and scale of their sustainability solution. The Global High Schools category has six winners, representing six world regions, each receiving $150,000.
