54 students on Thursday became the third group to graduate from the Samsung Electronics Engineering Academy in Nairobi.
According to Samsung Electronics East and Central Africa Vice President and COO Robert Ngeru, the academy has been integral in equipping the students with the latest global skills to enable them to compete effectively in the job market.
“The trainees have received hands-on training for free with Samsung’s top-of-the-range equipment. Top performing students will also get a chance to intern at Samsung Electronics and thereafter work as independent service technicians or employees within Samsung retail channels in their respective regions,” said Ngeru.

Over 200 students have graduated from the academy since its inception and more students are being enrolled for the program to bridge the technical skills gap situation in Africa.
“Not only is Africa facing a critical shortage of technical and engineering skills, its young people are also falling behind in physical sciences and engineering. Most Kenyan students cannot afford to travel abroad to gain these skills, hence Samsung Engineering Academy has brought this training closer home to bridge the skills gap which emanates from lack of resources that meet the industry standards,” added Mr. Ngeru.
Samsung Electronics has launched similar academies in South Africa, Ethiopia and Nigeria as part of its broader goal to develop 10,000 skilled electronics engineers across Africa.

The academy is part of Samsung’s global ‘Hope for Children’ initiative, which places a strategic focus on bringing attention to the worldwide need for childhood education and healthcare in an effort to improve communities worldwide.
The nine month course is made up of 20 percent theory coursework, while the practical work covers 80 percent.
“The student selection process is competitive and we recruit from the leading technical institutions across Kenya. The selected students should be in their final year of study at their respective university. Our focus is on those pursing Electrical and Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Scientific Computing and Mechanical and Industrial Engineering,” said Ngeru.
