2 Kajiado schools benefit from e-learning project led by Dell

Camara Education has teamed up with Dell and Computer Aid to provide access to information technology and skills to schools, through the Dell Youth Learning Program. Al-Huda Muslim and Ngong Township primary schools, both based in Kajiado County, are the latest beneficiaries of this ICT-in-education project, bringing the number to 17 schools across Africa, with an estimate of 7,500 students having profited since its launch.

The program, aimed at supporting the Digital Literacy Project by Ministry of Education, gives primary schools the opportunity to start on a digital journey for integrating ICT into everyday lessons by setting up computers in classrooms and solar powered labs.

The labs, built into well-lit and ventilated shipping containers, do not need electricity supply for internet connectivity. They use a combination of solar power, energy-efficient Dell Wyse technology and air-cooled servers to deliver sustainable and affordable connectivity to schools in underprivileged areas.

Speaking about the project, Houcine Faïk, EMEA Strategic Giving Manager at Dell, said, “The Solar Powered Labs reflect perfectly on our DNA which is to use technology and expertise to enable Human progress. This concept is set to breach the educational divide in areas suffering not only from poverty, but also from lack of access to energy”.

The Primary School ICT learning and Solar Program, complements the implementation of the Digital Literacy Program by the Government (DLP) in all public primary schools countrywide, to enhance learning through the use of digital technologies.

This project targets to deliver over 1.2 million devices in two years at a cost of Kshs 29 billion with additional investment in school infrastructure, teacher training, electricity connections and content development. It is aimed to impact positively communities and to aid the youth in researches, experience and networking.
