Vivo Communication Technology Co. Ltd is developing a device that has a colour-changing back panel. The phone uses an electrochromic glass that shifts hues on the panel. The phone uses the electrochromic technology on the rear panel to change colour shades at a press of a side button. It moves from pearl white to deep blue.
The company says it is using electrochromic glass to achieve this dazzling effect, the same tech that OnePlus employed in its Concept One phone to obscure its rear camera from view when it wasn’t being used.
In OnePlus’ proof of concept, shown at annual Consumer Electrics Show (CES) 2020, an electric signal caused the glass to switch between being tinted or transparent. Vivo’s implementation takes it further by using the tech to change the colour of the phone’s glass rear, which is an even more fun party trick.
