KOOBA is eyeing to invest heavily in the KONZA City once the technopolis city is up and running through the launch of one of its datacentres in the facility.
This was said by KOOBA CEO Richard Bell, during this year’s CIO100 Symposium held in Naivasha. The Symposium has attracted over 100 IT Experts from across East Africa.
KOOBA is set to launch its Data Centre in Mombasa in Q2 of the year 2016. The facility currently under construction in Mombasa will connect to the IXP in Nairobi so that content can easily be accessible. It will be developed in 3 phases on the1500sq metres with 6MW of power. The first phase will be on 500 sq metres with 2MW of power .

The Mombasa Datacentre project will take a period of five years to complete. It will also have space for people to build their own data centre facilities and offices for disaster recovery.
The centre will be powered by 33 kilowatts lines from two different power stations. After setting up the two datacentres, KOOBA will also look into moving to KONZA City where Mr. Bell said there are many opportunities that come will come with the new investment.
“In Konza we intend to get our power supply from Isinya once we set up since the Isinya dam is one of the largest power supply in Kenya. Talks are underway with the Government to have the project kick off . It will be our third data centre after setting up our DataCentres in Nairobi and Mombasa,” said Mr. Bell.

The data centre by KOOBA will be the first net neutral datacentre in East Africa since international content providers want to localise and they want to an independent data centre for that task.
KOOBA’s Mombasa Datacentre will be located just a few metres away from the Country’s submarine landing stations hosting TEAMs, EASSY, Seacom and LION Cables. It is also built to extend tier 3 standards with necessary redundancy, security, instrumentation and expert support to ensure maximum up time for the ICT environment.
“Our facility will be equipped with four separate fibre entrances each with six conduits. Conduit capacity will be available to any operator interested in connecting the building,” said Bell.

He also added that all connections will be enabled via a centrally located Meet Point Room (MPR) located in each phase.
South Africa has already had an independent data centre company, Teraco, and Nigeria has one as well known as Rack but to date East Africa has none, KOOBA is set to be the first.
