Innovation is the core of science and a key driver of economic development. This was said by the Cabinet Secretary of ICT, Mr Joe Mucheru, while closing a three-day workshop organized by the Grand Challenges Africa in Nairobi.
The CS underscored the need to invest in and celebrate innovation. “Kenya has become a growing hub for innovation. It is home of M-Pesa and M-kopa, examples of locally led innovations that are having far reaching impact globally.
He recognised home grown innovators like Kenneth Ndua, Njambi Njuguna and Fredros Okumu who have made innovations that can transform society. Mr Ndua has developed a low-cost stove that cooks and purifies water simultaneously, while Njambi is using a text messaging platform to educate 18-24 year old women about HIV.

Mr Mucheru noted that Grand Challenges partners had invested over $26 million in 113 grants in Kenya and $120 million in 380 projects in 29 countries. He thanked them, on behalf of Kenyans, for their vote of confidence in our innovators.
The CS emphasised the importance of public and private partnerships in encouraging innovation and cushioning risks in essential investments. Mr Mucheru commended the academy, saying the institution was spearheading efforts to have African governments’ buy-in to have science and technology put at the centre of the continents development agenda.
The three-day workshop brought together over 500 science innovators from across the world.
