Equinix Appoints Wole Abu As MD For West Africa
Equinix, an American multinational company that specializes in Internet connection and data centres has appointed Wole Abu as Managing Director for its West Africa business.
Abu succeeds Funke Opeke, who founded MainOne and led the company through its growth, including its $320 million acquisition by Equinix in 2022. The leadership change comes shortly after Equinix opened a new data center in Johannesburg, South Africa, as part of its commitment to expanding digital infrastructure across the continent.
In his new role, Abu will oversee Equinix’s West African operations, fostering partnerships with local and multinational companies to enhance connectivity and support regional growth. His responsibilities will include leveraging Equinix’s resources to advance the digital landscape in West Africa.

Abu brings significant experience to Equinix, having previously served as CEO for Liquid Intelligent Technologies in Nigeria and the Africa Data Centre, with prior roles at Airtel and Pan African Towers. Commenting on his new role, Abu expressed enthusiasm about Equinix’s vision for Africa, highlighting the potential for digital infrastructure to bring essential services to underserved areas and bridge the digital divide across the region.
