AWS Announces New IoT Service For The Automotive Industry
Amazon Web Services (AWS) on Wednesday announced the launch of FleetWise, a new IoT service for the automotive industry during its annual Invent Conference.
According to AWS, FleetWise will make it easier and more cost-effective for automakers to collect, transform, and transfer vehicle data to the cloud in near-real-time.
“Once the data is in the cloud, automakers can use it for tasks like remotely diagnosing issues in individual vehicles, analyzing vehicle fleet health to help prevent potential warranty claims and recalls, and collecting rich sensor data for training machine learning models that improve autonomous driving and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS),” it said in the announcement.

Also, FleetWise can access the unique data format of a vehicle then structure and standardize the data so automakers don’t have to build custom data collection systems.
“Automakers start in the AWS Management Console by defining and modeling vehicle attributes (e.g. a two-door coupe) and the sensors associated with the car’s model, trim, and options (e.g. engine temperature, front-impact warning, etc.) for individual vehicle types or multiple vehicle types across their entire fleet. After vehicle modeling, automakers install the AWS IoT FleetWise application on the vehicle gateway (an in-vehicle communications hub that monitors and collects data), so it can read, decode, and transmit information to and from AWS”.
According to Company, FleetWise intelligent filtering will help automakers reduce costs by limiting the amount of unnecessary data transferred to the cloud. “Automakers build data collection campaigns to select only the exact data they need for their use cases by creating conditional rules to filter the data they want to collect and analyze,”

It added: “Since data is transferred to the cloud in near-real-time, automakers don’t have to wait for customers to report vehicle problems before realizing there might be a fleet-wide issue. FleetWise can help automakers detect vehicle health issues early on so they can take corrective action quickly, like notifying the manufacturing group to help mitigate further spread”
FleetWise will be generally available in 2022 and that we’ll see cars available for purchase with it built-in around 2024.
IoT is revolutionizing the automotive industry and its uptake is set to increase in the coming years as buyers turn to cars with advanced features and companies adopt it for fleet management among other uses.
