Ericsson has announced that thanks to its Ericsson M-Commerce interconnect solution, providing digital enterprise payments for Grundfos, a pump manufacturer, based in Denmark, people in countries like Kenya will be able to have access ATM’s dispensing safe drinking water.
This announcement was made by Rajiv Bhatia, head of Mobile Commerce Sales EMEA, Ericsson during the AITEC Banking and Mobile Money COMESA Conference.
“One of the areas we are quite active in, on relation to the brands mobile money systems is to actually create inter-operability in both local and global finance, and a particular project I talked about is a collaboration with this Danish company called Grundfos, what they are doing is they are working with utilities in every country or with communities, to actually deploy water distribution ATM’s,” said Bhatia.

“And a big part of that ATM is to accept payments for the dispensing of clean water, so they wanted to find a way where they could connect with payment providers like the different mobile money systems in Kenya and all other markets where they are deploying these ATM’s,” he added.
Mr Bhatia explained that the main challenge Grundfos was facing in the deployment of the ATM’s, was having to go to each and every country to connect with each local mobile wallet provider.
“So Ericsson has a product which we launched to service called the M-Commerce interconnect, by virtue of that, we are basically giving these ATM digital payment connectivity in every market they deploy,” added Bhatia.

He explained that, whenever the Danish company deploys its machines in, whether it’s; Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria or Tanzania they won’t have to go do connectivity themselves with: M-pesa, MTN Money or Tigo cash, as Ericsson has already done connectivity’s with all of these players or they are planning to do so.
“We are about to launch quite soon in Kenya we are doing some tests and pilots right now, but we are hoping to go live within the next months or so.” He concluded.
