Pioneering the Future of Banking in Africa

As digital markets mature in Africa, the performance gap widens between leading and lagging banks, with digital front runners achieving four times better results than their counterparts, according to McKinsey. Consequently, digital transformation and innovation stand out as paramount priorities for many banks. On the corporate front, Access Bank's analysis indicates that Africa hosts over 400 companies with annual revenues exceeding $1 billion. With the African Continental Free Trade Area fostering connections among numerous countries, a surge in trade appears imminent.

Speaker List

However, African banks face significant operational costs, boasting an average cost-to-asset ratio of 4 to 5 percent — nearly double the global average, as reported by McKinsey. For instance, since 2016, profitability in Africa's five major banking markets (Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, and South Africa) has steadily declined, dropping by an average of two percentage points over six years.

In light of these challenges, including the imperative to enhance efficiency, contend with increased competition, adapt to evolving regulations, expedite digitalization, and seize growth opportunities, the question arises: How can banks navigate these complexities?

Oracle's Innovation Exchange event is offering you an opportunity to delve into the future of digital technologies and payments in Africa. Come join us!

Shaping the Next Chapter in African Banking

The banking sector in Africa finds itself at a crucial juncture in its transformation journey. While milestones have been achieved, challenges remain around navigating increased competition, evolving regulations, digitalization, profitability, and growth. To thrive amidst these complexities, banks must embrace emerging opportunities like digital onboarding, financial inclusion, and originations across the continent. Seamless customer experiences, remote account opening, and innovative lending products can accelerate growth. Equally pivotal is the evolving landscape of digital payments with the ascent of networks like PAPSS that promise pan-African interoperability. As pioneers steer the industry forward, a collaborative approach towards addressing pain points can unlock mutual value and shape a more robust financial ecosystem. Though the path has obstacles, greater financial access and efficiency is within reach.
